Walmart repaint application continued after board raises concerns about heavy browns

The Planning, Zoning and Design Board reviewed a repaint application for the Walmart at the site and continued the matter to March 10 pending clearer materials and samples.
Beth Primrose of Kahachi Peterson, the architect of record on the project, explained that Walmart’s recent branding consolidation left the company with a simplified blue but also an earth-tone palette; the team proposed a medium-brown palette behind signage to preserve contrast. Primrose said the brown tones come from Walmart’s earth-tone palette and that the design team attempted to balance signage contrast and brand fidelity.
Board members pushed back on the overall effect. One member said the building “reads as a big brown building” and urged redistributing the palette so lighter colors serve as the primary body color and darker 'sticks and stones' tones are used only as accents behind signage. Multiple members requested higher-fidelity 3-D renderings and paint applied to metal panels or CMU mockups so the board can evaluate how the palette will appear in the field rather than on paper renderings.
Staff and the applicant discussed whether paint and sign approvals should be packaged together administratively but noted timing could require separate submissions. After that discussion the board moved to continue the repaint application to March 10 (time certain) to allow the applicant to return with revised materials; the roll-call vote was unanimous in favor.
