Orange County supervisors mark Eid al‑Fitr and Nowruz, proclaim Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Orange County Board of Supervisors opened its March 10 meeting with ceremonial proclamations recognizing Eid al‑Fitr and Nowruz and with a resolution declaring March 2026 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, who represents the 2nd District, co-presented the Eid al‑Fitr proclamation and thanked community leaders including Dr. Dina Helmi of the Islamic Shura Council and religious directors from local centers, saying the recognition “sends a clear message that our diversity is strong here in Orange County.” Dr. Helmi addressed the board and thanked supervisors for the acknowledgment, describing Eid as “a meaningful moment for our community and a powerful affirmation of inclusivity.”

Vice Chair Katrina Foley introduced the Nowruz recognition and noted the holiday’s cultural importance for the county’s Iranian American residents. Foley and invited guests reflected on recent regional events and expressed solidarity with Iranians affected by violence abroad.

Later in the morning the board adopted a proclamation recognizing Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Supervisor Sarmiento framed the resolution around inclusion and community‑based supports, citing California’s Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act as the historic foundation for regional support systems. Moira Byron, executive director of the Family Support Network, described local services and navigation programs that assist families caring for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Each proclamation was accompanied by brief remarks from invited community representatives. The presentations concluded before the board began its regular agenda.
