Sevier County approves Horrocks Engineers feasibility study for possible rail near Big Rock Candy Mountain

Sevier County Commissioners on Jan. 12 approved an engineering services agreement with Horrocks Engineers LLC to study the feasibility of possible rail service near Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Executive Director Malcolm Nash reviewed the proposed study and said the County Attorney had made several changes to the agreement. Nash told the commission Horrocks Engineers will be in the area on Thursday to view the site and determine whether the project is viable. Commissioner Greg Jensen moved to approve the agreement subject to the site visit; Commissioner Ralph Brown seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The feasibility study follows a Commission update that the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition is researching west-coast port options, including a possible port in Washington state, to enable coal shipments and support area mines. The minutes do not specify project budget, timeline beyond the pending site visit, or which entity would fund construction if the study finds the project viable.
The commission recorded the agreement approval as conditional on the site visit; the executive director or Horrocks Engineers are expected to report back on findings after the visit.
