Commissioner says regional 'Core Connect' broadband study could expand county access

Commissioner James Moate reported on Aug. 8 that Cameron County is participating in the Core Connect feasibility study, a regional effort among eight northwest Pennsylvania counties to evaluate an Open Access broadband model. Under that model an infrastructure owner would retain the physical network, a network operator would handle day-to-day operations, and internet service providers would be able to connect and offer retail service.
Moate said funding is the primary concern for the project but that the participating counties reached a consensus to advance the feasibility work. He characterized the initiative as a significant opportunity to expand broadband in the region and noted there is substantial grant funding available that could support the concept.
The report was given as a commissioners’ update and did not require board action at the Aug. 8 meeting; commissioners indicated continued engagement with regional partners and potential grant opportunities would follow.
