Board reviews draft facilities master plan and directs study session to prioritize projects

Dan Paul, the district's chief operations officer, reviewed a draft facilities master plan project list that includes new construction, modernization, deferred maintenance and safety/security improvements for school sites across the district. Paul said the list, drawn from the 2019 master plan and January 2026 community meetings, is alphabetized by site and intentionally unprioritized.
He highlighted challenges such as end-of-life portables moved between campuses, restroom suites last updated in the early 2000s, and how some projects are mutually exclusive (example: either build a new middle-school gym or a practice gym at another site). Paul explained cost estimates were prepared with the district's architect and a contracted estimator and include both hard and soft costs.
Trustees asked detailed questions about the methodology, how estimates were developed, the relationship between deferred maintenance and capital projects, and how principals would be asked to prioritize site needs. Board members agreed a separate study session is appropriate to allow time for deeper review, project linking and public input; staff said principals' priority lists will be returned at month-end and the board will schedule a focused workshop.
No action was taken tonight; the item was informational and board members asked staff to bring a prioritized plan and associated cost estimates to a future study session.
