Failed appointment draws sharp debate over process and alleged retaliation

A proposed appointment to the Henderson Community Education Advisory Board prompted an extended exchange among council members after the motion to appoint Patsy Zimmerman failed.

Councilwoman Carrie Cox moved to appoint Zimmerman; staff recorded that the motion failed, with Mayor Michelle Romero and Councilwoman Carrie Cox supporting it and the remaining council voting against it. "What just happened was a miscarriage of justice and wrong," one council member said, urging the council to consider Zimmerman's qualifications and long service. The speaker added Zimmerman "is an educator" who will soon hold a doctorate and called the vote "a travesty."

Another council member responded that the remarks amounted to "political grandstanding" and corrected the characterization of Zimmerman's professional title, saying she is a reading interventionist rather than an educator as described. City staff reminded members that discussing an individual's qualifications at length would require a properly noticed meeting and personal notice to the person involved.

Council members noted the appointment seat had been vacant for several years in part because prior appointments were made or seats were left unfilled; the council also confirmed for the record that other interim appointments previously made remain on the committee. The council did not take further action on the appointment during the meeting.
