Board reopens animal-shelter interlocal with North Platte, directs staff to tighten intake and billing rules

County participants described two recent high-cost instances that highlighted the ambiguity: a group of sick animals that produced several thousand dollars in vet bills and an animal with severe trauma that was treated rather than euthanized, which produced unexpectedly large charges. Commissioners and Sheriff's Office representatives discussed evidence-chain concerns when animals are retained for cruelty investigations and the need to avoid putting veterinary clinics "in the middle" of unresolved billing arrangements.
The board did not finalize new terms but asked staff, the sheriff, and the city to draft clearer intake notification steps, a threshold for immediate veterinary care, and a plan for who authorizes extraordinary treatment and payment. The item was continued for follow-up at a future meeting.
