Silver City Elementary students showcase PBIS, student voice groups to school board

Students and staff from Silver City Elementary presented a classroom‑level view of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and the school’s student voice groups to the Forsyth County Board of Education on March 17.

Principal Mike Sloop told the board Silver City’s vision is “to ignite minds for a brighter tomorrow” and said two features set the school apart: its decade‑long PBIS work and its student voice groups. He introduced fifth graders D'Angelo Hammond and Sofia Bailey and other students who described the “Comet Way” (be respectful, be responsible, have integrity) and explained incentives including Comet Cash and the Comet Store.

Student presenters described shuttle challenges and Galactic Games — schoolwide events where shuttles (teams) earn points through behavior and activities. “Comet Cash…we get Comet Cash,” Sofia said as she described classroom rewards and the Comet Store. Tier‑2 PBIS coach Brandy Helms explained the Comet Club, a case‑management style intervention that sets daily goals, uses check‑ins and lets students ‘shop’ at a smaller weekly store for meeting targets.

Principal Sloop said feedback from student voice groups helped shape classroom themes, libraries and the school improvement plan (with a focus on attendance and student growth). He invited the board and community to attend Galactic Games on April 3.

Board members commended the students and staff for the program and took a group photograph.

What comes next: The board accepted the presentation and will consider invitations to attend the April 3 Galactic Games event.
