Summary
At a 6:30 p.m. committee meeting, city public services director Scott described the Alpine Estates pump station easement and the Maple Road sidewalk project (low bid $195,050 to Loadstar); commissioners then delivered committee reports and community announcements including an April 1 planning meeting and a community Easter egg hunt.
At 6:30 p.m. the Walker committee of the whole heard staff presentations on two infrastructure items before the regular March 23 commission meeting.
Scott, the city’s public services director, summarized the Alpine Estates pump station easement that covers a roughly 60-by-75-foot square at the corner of Glen Eyre and Gar Field. He said Grand Rapids operates the pump station though it sits on Walker-owned property, that the city attorney reviewed the easement and that Grand Rapids accepted some changes. "The easement has been gone over by the city attorney...And, we feel, comfortable recommending this for approval," Scott said.
Scott then briefed commissioners on the Maple Road sidewalk project, which he said is in the budget for the year and was developed by LRE Consultants. He reported that three local contractors bid the job and that the low bid was $195,050 from Loadstar. Scott told commissioners the work is expected to be constructed at grade to avoid drainage modifications and estimated a two- to three-week construction window. The project had a public open house attended by three residents, he said.
Following the presentations, commissioners provided short committee updates: the city clerk said the emergency planning committee is taking a new approach; Commissioner Chase urged colleagues to attend a joint Planning Commission/ZBA meeting on April 1 at 6:30 p.m.; and other commissioners noted personnel committee business and community events, including an Easter egg hunt scheduled for Saturday.
Why it matters: The easement clarifies access and liability for maintenance and contractor presence at a pump station serving neighborhood drainage, while the sidewalk project advances a budgeted pedestrian-connection promised in prior developments.
What to watch: Staff said the Maple Road project should be brief in duration once it begins; contract execution and easement recording are the immediate administrative steps needed to move to construction.
The committee adjourned and reconvened at 7:00 p.m. for the regular commission meeting where the consent agenda and resolutions were approved.
