Pasco County commissioners recognize Pasco High School speech and debate team

The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution recognizing Pasco High School's speech and debate team for achievements since the program began in September 2024.
The resolution (No. 26151) describes rapid growth from a student interest group into a competitive team that earned multiple regional championships and national honors. Head coach Mark Joseph Valdez told the board, "On behalf of Pasco High School, we extend our sincere thanks to Pasco County for this recognition and for highlighting the achievements of these students who work tirelessly to bring honor to the Pirate Nation and to our community." He thanked the school's principal, assistant coach and volunteers.
Students described the program's personal impact. Team captain David Lee said the group "didn't think we'd get this far" but credited coach Valdez and volunteers for the success. Another student said winning a national award in January was a "life changing experience" and that three students will represent Pasco County at the national tournament in Richmond, Virginia this summer.
Commissioners praised the students; they posed for a photograph and approved the recognition by voice vote.
