Council approves scaled‑down pier land‑side plan with beach‑patrol office, smaller shade structure

The City Council on March 4 approved an amended Naples Pier land‑side design that reduces deck volume and removes full concessions and restaurant‑style outdoor dining, while adding a small beach‑patrol office and new restrooms.
Maureen Minker, lead designer for MHK, showed before‑and‑after renderings that shrink covered deck area and relocate or remove concession spaces. "This is the current design with a much smaller shade structure and the Beach Patrol office," she said. The design retains existing shower locations and converts a previous changing room to pier storage.
Several council members pressed staff about how the pier will be maintained and how lost concession revenue will be covered. City Manager Young noted the city receives ongoing maintenance support through a TDC grant and paid beach parking funds and that maintenance will not come from the general fund.
Councilmember Kramer moved to approve the amended land‑side plans, including the beach‑patrol office and restrooms, and asked staff to evaluate electrical capacity so a mobile vendor cart offering ice cream and water might be accommodated; Councilmember Schultz seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The council also asked staff to continue the underwater camera project and to ensure construction communication plans are shared with residents during demolition and construction.
