District reports on PLC coaching model, program participation and plans for Student Voice Fair

Dr. John Balmer, Assistant Superintendent of HR and School Improvement, briefed the board on the district’s Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and the PLC coaching model. Balmer described PLCs as a structure for developing teacher and administrator skills, emphasizing that “when adults learn and grow, student achievement improves.” He said the district is using a cyclical coaching process aligned to instructional goals to help teams assess practice, identify improvement areas and reflect on outcomes.
District staff also reported participation and achievement highlights across athletics, arts and student activities. Middle school band and choir programs served over 390 students combined; Cavelero Mid High reported particularly strong ninth-grade participation; Lake Stevens High School reported approximately 500 students participating in ASB clubs and about 460 students in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). The district highlighted multiple league championships at the middle- and mid-high levels, WESCO championships in volleyball and football, and state qualifications for several high-school athletes.
Student advisory council leaders Aashi Bendalam (SACo president) and Ginelle Sarpong (SACo secretary) announced a Student Voice Fair scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, 5:00–7:00 p.m. at North Lake Middle School. The fair will include advisory booths staffed by upperclass students, booths for clubs and CTSOs, and opportunities for students to share perspectives and receive peer guidance.
Board members praised the level of student engagement and the role extracurriculars play in mentorship and achievement. Directors highlighted the value of the PLC work, the vibrancy of extracurricular programs and the district’s growing recognition for student accomplishment.
