Suffield BOE committee drafting AI guidelines after board adopts policy

District staff updated the Board of Education on May 19 that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Committee is moving from policy to implementation. Rebecca Osleger, joined by Suffield High School Assistant Principal Shannon Insero and Grade 3 teacher Lisa LaForte, said the committee is drafting guidelines to govern the district’s use of AI and will recommend teacher resources and professional development. The presentation said some teachers may pilot AI tools next year, including free versions of Gemini and Magic School.
Board members asked how teachers will determine which lessons are appropriate for AI, how the district will teach students to verify AI‑sourced information, whether prompt‑development skills will be taught, and whether research about developmental appropriateness is being considered. Ms. Osleger said the committee’s work builds on the board’s recently adopted AI policy and that parent engagement will be part of implementation planning. Superintendent Matthew Dunbar expressed support for the committee’s work.
