Committee unanimously advances bill clarifying Ivy Tech's governance, workforce mission

The Senate education committee unanimously advanced Senate Bill 254 after testimony from Ivy Tech Community College and business representatives that the changes would modernize the college's statutory mission and governance.

Senator Goode, introducing SB 254, described the bill as a statutory update to reflect workforce needs and Ivy Tech's evolving role. Mary Jane Michalak of Ivy Tech told the committee the statute had not been updated since 2016 and said the bill would "ensure that our state board members have expertise in logistics, life sciences, and information technology" and would allow local employers to serve on campus advisory boards.

Testimony in support came from Ivy Tech officials and the Indiana Chamber, with a chamber representative saying the proposals are a "smart and straightforward way" to modernize governance and better prepare students for in‑demand jobs. The bill also explicitly adds dual credit and dual enrollment to the college mission, acknowledging Ivy Tech's status as a major dual‑credit provider.

Committee members praised Ivy Tech's role and the measure's focus on workforce alignment; the committee recorded a unanimous vote (11‑0) to pass SB 254 out of committee.
