Suffield reviews summer programming; elementary kindergarten experience is fully funded, high school sessions canceled for maintenance

Assistant Superintendent Michelle Zawawi briefed the Board on the district's summer offerings. The Kindergarten Experience is open to all incoming kindergartners and will be fully funded by the Board. Extended School Year (ESY) services for students with Individualized Education Programs will be provided based on each student's IEP and are Board-funded.
Suffield Middle School will offer tuition-based recovery programs in English language arts and math, and online boot camps for pre-algebra and algebra with office hours. The Music Summer Camp and other enrichment courses are tuition-based and require a minimum enrollment (generally at least 10 students per session). Zawawi noted Suffield High School will not hold summer sessions because of planned maintenance projects on campus.
Board members asked questions about how course selections are made, why drama offerings were not included, enrollment numbers for tuition-based programs, and whether SAT preparation would be offered during the school year instead of as a summer program. No formal action was taken; board members requested additional information about enrollments and program selection for future consideration.
