Daniel council sends state wildland‑urban‑interface map and code to Planning Commission; discusses fireworks restrictions

Daniel Town’s council voted to send the state’s wildland‑urban‑interface (WUI) map and draft implementing code to the Planning Commission for a formal recommendation, after a presentation from Wasatch County Fire Warden Troy Morgan.

Morgan told the council the new state requirement took effect Jan. 1, 2026, and that parts of Daniel fall into the state’s high‑risk WUI areas. He said the town can set its own WUI boundaries and recommended re‑evaluating the map if future development along 3000 South changes the urban/wildland interface. "Each municipality has two years from the adoption of a new state code to bring town/city code to standard," Morgan said.

Councilmembers asked about the geographic scope of recommended high‑risk areas; Morgan said the draft recommendation would include only the south side of Little Sweden and that any boundary must be definable by man‑made or natural features. The council also discussed fireworks restrictions: Mayor Scott Kohler said the town will post signs at major intersections and along 3000 South indicating fireworks restrictions for areas south of 3000 South during the summer months, and Bennett urged the town to place larger signs earlier in the season.

Councilmember Eric Bennett moved to send the map and code to the Planning Commission for review; Councilmember Gary Walton seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote: Bennett yes, Walton yes, Rose yes, Kohler yes. Town staff and the Fire District will return recommendations to the council after the Planning Commission’s review.
