Summary
Commissioners discussed wayfinding sign wording and placement, were updated on staff reports including an Oct. 16 police event and an Oct. 26 land-use public input session, and Mayor Cauthen urged immediate repaving and new crosswalks on Eighth Avenue and North Main Street.
At the Oct. 7 meeting the Board of Commissioners reviewed draft bid documents for wayfinding signage and several routine staff reports.
On signage, commissioners debated neighborhood naming (Old Town vs. Riverside), preferred the word "neighborhood" for historic districts predating 1943, and asked staff to consider consistent fonts, visibility from main roads, sign size differences between parks and neighborhoods, and the inclusion of the C.B. Huss Recreation Complex and the Historical Museum on signs.
Town Manager David Pugh reported that Finance Director Joel Lineberger will retire at the end of the year and that interviews to fill the role will begin in November. Police Chief Brad Adams announced a special event Oct. 16 at the Centennial Center gazebo (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.), and planning staff noted a public input session for the Land Use Plan on Oct. 26. Parks staff said downtown aeration and seeding had taken place and would take about three weeks to germinate.
Several commissioners raised local maintenance and safety concerns. Commissioner Helms requested an updated code enforcement report and noted security needs at the abandoned water plant; Commissioner Atkinson relayed resident concerns about speeding on small streets; Mayor Cauthen asked staff to prioritize repaving Eighth Avenue and North Main Street and to add crosswalks near Riverside Park and at the Town Hall underpass.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
