Maywood dissolves Environmental Beautification Commission; trustees direct code amendment to create Energy & Environment and Beautification commissions

On Sept. 17 the board voted to dissolve the existing Environmental Beautification Commission and to instruct staff to draft a code amendment to create two new bodies: an Energy and Environment Commission and a separate Beautification Commission. Trustee Nathaniel Booker argued for separating the functions; Trustee Jones seconded the motion.
The motion passed with five trustees voting in favor and Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Trustee I. Brandon recorded as voting 'Nay.' Commissioner Rogers (representing the Environmental Beautification Commission) had recommended reducing the commission’s required membership from seven to five, which was discussed during the deliberation.
The action directs staff to prepare the code amendment language for future board consideration; it does not itself implement new commissions or appoint members. The board also directed Trustee Booker to work with Community Development staff on goals and objectives for a separate Economic Development Commission and to return those goals to the board for consideration.
