MCPS presented an update on employee exit patterns and vacancy rates aimed at improving retention and workforce stability.
Director Tom Brewster said exit totals have declined (from 284 to 230 over two years) and the exit rate fell from 16.6% to 13%. Teacher exits were reported around 8% for 2024–25, comparable to state and national averages. Brewster said vacancy rates at the start of the year for paraprofessionals improved (3.5% this year versus 16% last year), and the division has seen improvements in recruiting and benefits that contributed to lower vacancy rates.
Brewster noted limitations: current‑year exit data run only through March and require further analysis; the district plans a deeper breakdown by job category and race to examine minority equity trends. The presentation recommended targeted retention strategies, improved exit-survey analysis, and continued teacher initiatives. Board members asked for absolute counts (total employees per category) and for a follow‑up report that includes demographic percentages and comparisons to prior years.
Next steps: administration will prepare a more detailed workforce analysis at the end of the school year showing total employees by category, demographic breakdowns and drivers of retention.
