Summary
The City of Norton Planning Commission unanimously approved PC application 06/2026 for a metal pavilion-like structure on an existing pad at Lake Park; the owner will remove an old pavilion and pursue permits through Barberton. The commission recorded a unanimous roll-call vote and noted an editorial parcel-number correction.
The City of Norton Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve PC application 06/2026, a final site plan for a metal equipment structure on a pad at the Lake Park.
Chair Dowling said the submission will replace an existing pavilion and noted an editorial correction is needed to the parcel number (the parcel is listed as 01666, not 08935). The zoning administrator told the commission that the plan "meets all the requirements," that the city engineer had no comments and that staff saw no zoning conflicts.
Christopher Schmidt, the property owner and operator of Lake Campground (2678 South Haintown Road), described the proposal as a pole-style metal shed on the existing tennis-court pad with no poured foundation and "nothing more than just overhead lights" for interior illumination. He said the adjacent heated workshop will continue to be used for equipment repairs and that the new structure is intended primarily to park and hide miscellaneous equipment.
Commission discussion centered on engineering and snow-load calculations; members noted the building had been engineered and that drift/load issues on the lean-to had been addressed. With no outstanding objections, Commissioner Leyda moved to approve the application; the motion was seconded and the roll-call vote was recorded as yes from those present.
After the vote the zoning administrator said staff would forward an email and the applicant should obtain the necessary permit from Barberton as the next administrative step. The commission also approved the meeting minutes of March 24 during the same session.
The approval included an editorial note to correct the parcel number in the record and did not create any immediate additional permit conditions beyond standard permitting and Building Department review.
