Summary
At its March 10 meeting the Crete Monee CUSD 201U Board of Education reviewed the district's 2024'26 facility plan, heard that a $364,000 flooring bid for the middle school fits within a $380,000 contingency, and discussed Sportsplex and auditorium upgrades funded from bond proceeds.
At its March 10 meeting the Crete Monee CUSD 201U Board of Education reviewed the district's 2024'26 short-term facility plan and heard staff recommend bringing a flooring contract to the board for approval at the March 16 meeting.
Jason, presenting the facilities update, said the plan covers remaining work at four elementary schools, the Crete Elementary roof, Sportsplex punch-list items and a middle-school addition. He told the board the total remaining projects, including contingency, are roughly $6.6 million and that the district expects a surplus of about $7,375,000 when the current bond-funded projects close.
On flooring, Jason reported the district solicited bids to replace corridor and classroom flooring in the middle school. He said four vendors bid on components of the work and that using Texas-granite tile in hallways and Tarkett flooring in classrooms produced a recommended price of about $364,000, which fits inside an existing $380,000 contingency for the project. "We have the option to replace the flooring in the classrooms and the corridors at the middle school, and it can fit within the contingency that you guys see right now," Jason told the board.
Board members pressed for details about allowances inside the base price and how much wiggle room remained; Jason said there are allowances for data cabling and winter-weather contingencies and that he would bring the formal action item next meeting.
The board also heard project updates for the Sportsplex. Jason said replacing the main competition gym scoreboard and upgrading auditorium lighting remain as punch-list items; the lowest quote for auditorium lighting was reported at $464,069 and the scoreboard replacement will add shot-clock capability to comply with Illinois High School Association (IHSA) requirements for girls' and boys' basketball. Jason said staff will investigate potential ComEd rebates for the lighting upgrade.
Several members raised concerns about the auditorium sound system after a recent Black History Month performance. "The sound was awful. It was horrendous," a board member said, asking that staff include audio redesign considerations when planning the lighting work. Jason agreed to review the audio separately and report back.
Jason reiterated that the surplus funds he described must be spent in accordance with the bond covenants and suggested the district would prioritize remaining capital needs before reallocating funds. He said the board will see formal action on the middle-school flooring and other line items at the March 16 meeting.
Next steps: administration will present the flooring award and any related contract language at the March 16 meeting; staff will also provide any available information on rebates and design allowances for the auditorium work.
