The Fernley Senior Citizen Advisory Committee set the schedule and logistics for its annual Angel Tree program at its October meeting, approving an application window, placement and a distribution plan for holiday gifts.
Chair Jackie LaVoy proposed opening applications on Nov. 21 with a deadline of Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.; members agreed to have the Angel Tree on display by Nov. 21 and to make angels available from Dec. 6 through Dec. 15. "So the application dates would be November 21 to December 1 or fifth," LaVoy said; members chose to extend the window through Dec. 5.
The committee agreed that the city clerk's office should serve as the single intake point for applications so materials can be tracked and transferred to staff member Casey for processing. LaVoy described a numbering system to match each application to an 'angel' on the tree and asked that gift tags or bags include the corresponding number so gifts can be matched to requests.
Members discussed return and distribution logistics. Gifts are to be returned by Dec. 15; distribution is planned for Friday, Dec. 19, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Fishbowl at City Hall. Because of the tight schedule, members said they had no objection to accepting wrapped gifts this year; they recommended gift bags to simplify matching.
Committee members emphasized rapid outreach to ensure community awareness, suggesting the city newsletter, Facebook and electronic reader boards as distribution channels. Jordan Hicks and other volunteers offered to assist with application formatting and outreach; staff will circulate the final application and calendar to committee members in compliance with open‑meeting rules.
Next steps: chair to send a one‑page application draft to staff (Casey) and committee members; clerks to serve as intake; staff to prepare publicity materials so outreach can begin promptly.
