Summary
Council approved a budget amendment to accept a $3.71 million Water Sector grant plus local matching funds (~$1.735M), authorizing three projects: a 12‑inch waterline to create a loop, emergency generators at pump stations, and Garber Road well and a 500,000‑gallon storage tank.
The Broussard City Council on April 14 authorized a budget amendment to accept Water Sector grant funds and proceed with three water‑system projects intended to increase storage and system redundancy.
Daniel Hutchinson of Como Engineering told the council the Water Sector portion of funding is $3,710,000; combined with the city’s portion (~$1,735,500) the total package is roughly $5.445 million. The projects include a 12‑inch waterline extension along North Gerard Road to create a loop to the industrial area and Highway 90, installation of emergency generators at booster pump stations, and Garber Road water‑well improvements that would add a groundwater storage tank (about 500,000 gallons) and a new well with approximately 1,000 gallons per minute capacity.
Hutchinson said the grant includes tight deadlines: design, LDH review (Louisiana Department of Health), WaterSector approval and then 30 days to advertise bids. He reported the first two projects were set to be advertised immediately. Council and staff discussed water quality, blending of wells to manage chloride intrusion, and the need to test multiple aquifer zones. Hutchinson described plans to drill and test a lower, middle and upper zone before final design.
Council approved the resolution allowing the city to move forward with required design, permitting and bidding to secure the grant funds. Staff noted that two projects were set to bid the next day and that the well and tank work would follow LDH plan‑review revisions.
Next steps: staff and Como Engineering will finalize bid documents for the first projects, respond to LDH comments for the well/tank phase and proceed with procurement under grant deadlines.
