Summary
Montage Health CEO Dr. McDermott briefed the council on local services, a new thrombectomy stroke program in partnership with UCSF, workforce initiatives including a $15 million investment in a nursing school at CSUMB and $1 million in scholarships, and invited collaboration on community-health priorities.
Dr. McDermott, chief executive of Montage Health, introduced himself to the council and outlined recent investments and program expansions aimed at improving access to care on the Monterey Peninsula.
McDermott said Montage operates more than 20 locations across the peninsula, including primary, specialty and urgent-care clinics that together supported hundreds of thousands of ambulatory visits last year. He highlighted a new thrombectomy program for severe stroke patients implemented in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco, enabling care locally at Community Hospital that previously required transfers out of the area.
The CEO emphasized workforce and economic-vitality initiatives: Montage provided over $1,000,000 in scholarships in 2025, launched "grow your own" programs, and invested $15,000,000 to establish the Montage Health Helen Bouzucki School of Nursing at California State University, Monterey Bay to expand the nursing pipeline. He described programs allowing clinical staff to return to school full time while retaining pay and benefits.
Council members welcomed the presentation and asked about opportunities for local partnerships and the expansion of MoGo urgent-care sites. McDermott said Montage plans to continue expanding urgent-care capacity and invited the city to reach out about partnership opportunities around access to care, workforce development and emergency preparedness.
The council thanked McDermott for the update and indicated interest in further collaboration.
