The Pawtucket School Committee voted April 14 to execute a memorandum of agreement with the Rhode Island Department of Education School Building Authority to accept an $815,000 Facilities Opportunity Initiative capital award.
Administration told the committee the award is fully reimbursable and was smaller than the $6.5 million the district originally requested; RIDE/SBA selected priorities the district will address, including acoustics and learning‑environment upgrades, playground and pre‑K safety enhancements, redesign of the library at Slater Middle School and a radon mitigation system.
Committee members asked whether grant conditions or recapture provisions would require buildings to remain open for a set period; administration said it would follow up with the school committee clerk to provide details about any recapture or operating requirements and how the award interacts with existing bond funding.
A motion to approve executing the MOA was made, seconded and approved by roll call. Administration said it will pursue any allowable amendments to the award with the SBA if priorities need to be adjusted to better match district needs.
