Maywood accepts Foreign Fire Insurance allocation and approves firefighter academy payment

The Village of Maywood on Dec. 18, 2018 accepted a Foreign Fire Insurance (FFI) tax allocation for the fire department and authorized payment for rookie firefighter training.
Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh Jr. explained the FFI allocation provides funds to obtain items outside the department’s operating budget; the board approved acceptance of $32,626.47. Trustee H. Yarbrough asked why the full allocation was not used in the previous year. Chief Bronaugh said he had withheld spending to ensure the department had a proper structure for using the funds. Finance Director Lanya Satchell provided context for FFI: the funds originate from 2% of what the insurance carrier charges for premiums, are issued to the village but intended for fire department use, and a governing-body election was requested previously for direction on use.
The board also approved a payment of $12,300 to the University of Illinois to enroll three Maywood rookie firefighters in the State Certified Base Firefighter Academy.
Both motions carried with the trustees present voting in favor; absent trustees were noted in the record. No amendments or conditions were attached to these approvals at the meeting.
