The Board of Voter Registration and Elections introduced Jean Felix as the new director at the Feb. 23 council meeting. Matt Sweeney, chair of the board, described Felix’s background and the board’s confidence in her leadership, and Felix outlined operational priorities for 2026.
Felix said the department is negotiating to replace two early-voting centers, including its Beaufort center (awaiting confirmation from TCL) and possibly the Bluffton Recreation Center gymnasium, and noted the Bluffton center is the county's busiest. The department is conducting community forums (Saint Helena Library March 19; Hilton Head Library April 9; Dale Community Center April 16), training poll workers (roughly 800 for large elections), and preparing for a special election May 12, June primaries (possible runoff), and the November general election.
Felix requested council help identifying polling locations and asked that members share outreach flyers for poll-worker recruitment and candidate workshops. Council welcomed the new director and scheduled future committee-level reports from elections staff.
