Summary
The council appointed five members to the Board of Adjustments, reappointed two Planning & Zoning members and scheduled public hearings for proposed zoning changes including zero setbacks, R2 zone standards and roof-height limits; Planning & Zoning previously approved reducing maximum structure height from 30 to 27 feet.
At its March 9 meeting the Scofield Town Council confirmed mayoral appointments to the Board of Adjustments, reappointed two planning commissioners and set public hearings on proposed zoning changes.
Mayor Jim Levanger appointed Duane Sutherland, Ron Warren, Brad Parish, Stewart Behling and Matt Johnson to the Board of Adjustments for 2026. Brad Peacock moved to appoint the five candidates, Meliss Holloway seconded and the council voted to confirm the appointments.
The council reappointed Shane Murano and Lorraine Behling to the Planning & Zoning commission after a motion by Brad Peacock and second by Ralph Brinkerhoff. Planning & Zoning had reported that it approved lowering the maximum allowed structure height from 30 feet to 27 feet to accommodate the town’s lack of a ladder fire truck; the change was described as limiting buildings to two stories plus trusses.
Council members also discussed drafting an ordinance to impose a 3% convenience charge for credit-card payments on water, sewer and business-license transactions to offset bank processing fees; staff will prepare ordinance language for consideration at the next council meeting. The council set public hearings on April 13, 2026: a 6:30 p.m. hearing to consider zero-setback proposals in commercial and R2 zones and roof-height rules, and a 5:30 p.m. hearing to hear Carbon County representatives.
No council votes were recorded in March to adopt the zoning changes themselves; the hearings will be the next formal opportunity for public comment and council action.
