Assembly asks administration to study wildfire interface service‑area options

The Anchorage Assembly voted unanimously April 14 to ask the administration to study whether a wildfire interface service area is a feasible tool to fund and coordinate long‑term wildfire risk mitigation in identified high‑risk wildland‑urban interface zones.

Assemblymember Martinez, sponsor of the request, said the resolution grew out of updated wildfire interface maps and partner work and asked the administration to explore what a dedicated service area could look like and whether it could deliver dedicated support for wildfire response and mitigation. “This item calls for the exploration of feasibility and looking at whether or not it even makes sense considering the cost of the danger in these interface zones,” Martinez said.

Assemblymember Johnson urged caution and emphasized that the resolution is a fact‑finding request, not the creation of a new tax or service area. “This is merely a request to the administration to investigate the feasibility,” he said, adding that if pursued further the Assembly and voters would have future opportunities to decide.

The administration and fire‑division staff present were thanked for earlier mapping and outreach; members asked that the analysis consider a range of funding and boundary options, including municipality‑wide approaches, and return detailed findings to the Assembly for deliberation.

What’s next: The administration will undertake the analysis requested and report back to the Assembly; the resolution does not by itself create a service area or levy.
