Summary
A Forsgren engineer told Newton council that pre-bid meetings attracted seven contractors and CCCOG funding will cover the road-widening work; the town will be responsible for added parking costs and removal of three trees.
Jacob Ames of Forsgren & Associates briefed the Newton Town Council on the Center Street widening project on March 5, reporting that a pre-bid meeting drew seven contractors and that bids will be opened March 12.
Ames said the Cache County Council of Governments (CCCOG) funding is intended to cover the road-widening portion of the project from Main Street to 100 South, but the town will be responsible for parking improvements and any associated expenses. He outlined drainage work that will tie a new culvert into an existing culvert and move runoff through a new 2-by-2 drain box into a catch basin east of the veterans memorial and then into a 12-inch storm line that connects to an older system.
Ames also said three trees will need to be removed to make room for new parking areas; he noted two of the trees are dead or dying. The project team will issue an addendum addressing questions raised during the pre-bid meeting prior to the March 12 bid opening. Council members asked project staff to monitor bids and report back on any town cost implications once bids are received.
