Council members invite community to Veterans Day suicide-awareness walk; city announces traffic pilot and schedule changes

At the Nov. 3 meeting, Council member Mortensen described a second annual community walk to raise awareness of veteran suicide and invited veterans, families and city staff to participate on Veterans Day.
Mortensen said participants will "walk for the 18 minutes for the 18 veterans that commit suicide daily in our nation" and that the event begins at 9 a.m. on the POW/MIA bridge; some participants rotate to walk 18-minute segments while others walk longer.
Council member Mortensen said the event is not a city program but appreciated the mayor permitting him time to speak and encouraged council and staff participation. Another council member noted the U.S. Marines' 250th anniversary and said the council planned to supply donuts to the VA hospital.
The mayor announced a pilot project to test four-way stops at Lincoln & Court and Lincoln & Mill from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 intended to slow downtown traffic and possibly reduce signal maintenance costs. The mayor also reviewed upcoming dates: city closure for Veterans Day (Nov. 11), a committee-of-the-whole meeting on Nov. 12, a council work session Nov. 17 followed by a meeting, and a town hall on Dec. 3.
The mayor said a closed meeting had been posted anticipating a counteroffer on property at 2010 West Lincoln under Minnesota Statute 13D.05, but no counteroffer had yet been received; staff said they expected further details before the Dec. 17 meeting.
