Board members spent significant time discussing proposed changes to the student-evaluation and grading policy to align written policy with current practice for grades K–3.
Interim assistant superintendent Amanda Weidner explained that the division already uses standards-based grading on K–3 report cards and seeks to update Policy 6-2.2 to reflect that practice. She said the change would leave grades 4 and 5 on a letter-based system while clarifying language about academic and social progression.
Board members asked administration to gather additional input from third-grade teachers and to provide the information already collected from fourth- and fifth-grade teachers. One member stressed that while the practice appears successful, the board should see survey results and, if needed, additional outreach before making the policy permanent. The director of elementary education (Mitchell) offered to compile and return further feedback.
The board did not adopt a final policy change at the meeting; members requested a summary of teacher feedback, impacts on student transitions to fourth grade and clear communications for families explaining the standards-based report card metrics.
