The department said officers responded about 3:15 p.m. on the second to Lions Park after a report that a man was hitting another person’s car, throwing items into the river and fighting. The department said officers located the man and took him into custody. A witness at the scene (listed in the transcript as “Witness”) described the incident: “he kept throwing stuff in the over the fence, and then he started hitting the old man's car,” and said the suspect approached her vehicle while her daughter screamed, prompting her to call police.
The department said the Lions Park suspect was booked on charges of disorderly conduct and malicious mischief.
The update also recounted an officer-initiated traffic stop where an officer told a driver the stop was for crossing yellow lines and driving over a curb and sidewalk on Cameron Way. Body-camera audio included the officer identifying himself as Officer Espinosa Malperdone and directing the driver during the stop. The department said that driver was charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license.
On the tenth, the department reported officers located a vehicle reported stolen from Bellingham in the 300 block of East College Way. Officers arrested a suspect after he concealed packages of steaks on his person; while investigating they said they located evidence of drugs in the vehicle. That suspect was charged with theft and possession of a controlled substance and was turned over to the Bellingham Police Department to face additional charges related to the stolen vehicle and an alleged court-order violation.
A separate traffic stop on the seventeenth began after officers were called to the 1600 block of East College Way to check on a driver reported unconscious at the wheel. Officers found the vehicle being driven erratically on Continental Place and made a stop; the department said the driver attempted to hide alcohol and showed signs of intoxication. Body-camera audio captures the officer repeatedly instructing the driver not to reach and to step out. The officer then administered a breath test that registered "0.221," and the officer said on the radio log that the result was recorded and that the driver would be arrested for investigation of DUI. In the audio the officer said, “a 0.221…that’s over 3 times the legal limit.”
The department said that driver was arrested and charged with DUI and failure to obey a police officer.
