Marshalltown school board approves early-bid process for Miller Middle School, sets Nov. 17 public hearing

The Marshalltown Community School District Board voted unanimously Oct. 20 to order construction of early bid packages for the Miller Middle School modernization and set a Nov. 17 public hearing at 5 p.m. for those early packages.

District finance staff described the plan for early packages covering architectural/structural precast concrete, exterior glazing, curtain walls and elevators—items the administration said have lead times of a year or more. Randy Denham, the district’s board secretary and finance lead, told trustees that bids for the early package will be due Nov. 11, that the design team (Boyd Jones with Envision) will prepare award recommendations, and that the board should be ready to consider awards at the Nov. 17 meeting with formal contracts presented by Dec. 1.

The board approved the resolution ordering construction and fixing a date for taking bids for the early packages, and the motion carried 7‑0. No objections were recorded during the vote.

Why it matters: the administration said staging early procurement for long‑lead items will reduce schedule risk for the overall modernization and allow contractors to secure materials with lengthy fabrication times. Trustees did not change the advertised timeline; staff will return with bid packages and public‑hearing notices as scheduled.

What’s next: bids are expected back by Nov. 11; the board will hold the public hearing and consider awarding early bids on Nov. 17, and staff aim to return with contracts for approval on Dec. 1.
