Summary
Superintendent Sheila Meggers explained the state statute process for calculating nonresident enrollment capacity (grade-by-grade, building-level, based on student–teacher ratios and program capacity); the board approved the projections and will post them by June 1 as required.
The Shawnee Heights USD board voted 4-0 to approve nonresident enrollment capacity projections that the district will post by June 1, in compliance with a state statute requiring per‑building, per‑grade projections.
Superintendent Sheila Meggers told the board the process begins with current enrollment and rolls students forward by grade, then factors in the number of teachers and a student–teacher ratio, with a small buffer for anticipated growth: "This is a state statute that outlines what we have to do, and we have to post on our website by June 1, by building and by grade level, how many open seats we anticipate," Meggers said.
Meggers said capacity calculations differ at the high‑school level, where the district uses program capacity and the number of sections of core classes (for example, 12 sections for freshman and sophomore core classes, 11 in junior and senior years) to determine openings. She recommended board approval and the board adopted the projections by voice vote, 4-0 (motion by Rocky, second by Sarah).
The district will publish the grade‑by‑grade, building‑level seat projections on its website as required; Meggers noted the projection process is iterative and described it as "not an exact science."
