The Shawnee Heights Unified School District board on Tuesday voted 4-0 to approve 15 curriculum maps covering career-technical education (CTE) business and health pathways, a new contemporary math course and several elective and pathway classes.
Miss Bell presented the maps, saying, "For this round of maps that you'll be looking at today, there are 15 of them," and walked the board through middle- and high-school offerings, from an introduction to health care and medical interventions to AP Computer Science Principles and entrepreneurship. She said the contemporary math map was developed with input from Washburn University and that students who follow CTE health pathways will complete CNA or CMA work at Washburn Tech.
The maps list course units, pathway-specific work experiences and connections to postsecondary partners. Miss Bell told the board most instructional resources are digital and that the district will delay any large purchases until July to avoid paying for unused licenses: "we won't actually, look at those licenses until July. So, all of the resources we are going to use are on the maps for you that you approved tonight, but it won't require a heavy lift for purchasing until later."
Board member comment praised the reinsertion of national and international news instruction at the middle-school level. One board member recalled a personal experience with contemporary news coursework, saying it was "such an impactful thing." The board then moved the maps for approval; the motion (moved by Sarah, seconded by Buck) carried 4-0.
The approval covers curricula and the instructional scope presented; specific resource purchases and license agreements will return to the board later when enrollment and program needs are finalized.
