Lexington council approves routine business, permits Fall Festival with alcohol variance and alters City Hall hours 3–2

The Lexington City Council conducted routine business and several event approvals at its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 8, at City Hall. Mayor Allen Retzlaff presided.
Council actions recorded in the meeting included approval of the Aug. 11 regular meeting and budget workshop minutes and payment of August bills. The council granted a variance to allow a mobile home for Wilbert Taylor at 902 Ninth Street and approved an interlocal Contract for Services with the Lee County Tax Office.
The council approved street closures for National Night Out (Main, Third, Fourth and Wheatley around the square) and authorized the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Lexington Community Enterprises and the Lexington Rodeo Association to host a rodeo, dance and chili cookoff at Lexington Memorial Park on Nov. 8, 2025. The council also granted the Lexington Chamber of Commerce a variance to allow alcohol at that event.
The council voted to keep existing water and sewer rates unchanged. Council members approved several routine reports (financial/budget, police, code enforcement, public works, municipal court and mayor/council reports) as noted on the agenda.
On a contested vote, Councilperson Dana Matson moved to change City Hall hours of operation for six months to Monday–Thursday 7:45 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 12:30–5:00 p.m., and Friday 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.; Councilperson Anthony Retzlaff seconded. The motion carried 3 in favor, 2 against (Dale Phelps and Bobby Wesner). The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
