Summary
Sheriff Austin told the Bedford County Public Safety Committee that deputies patrolled 78,569 miles and served 850 warrants in March, made 242 arrests and handled 360 investigations; he said a large share of service activity occurred in Shelbyville and noted a delayed drug-task-force report.
Sheriff Austin told the Bedford County Public Safety Committee that the county's deputies were busy in March, reporting that "The Bedford County Sheriff's Department in the month of March patrolled 78,569, served a total of 850 warrants," and that the department made 242 arrests and conducted about 360 investigations.
In presenting the monthly activity, the sheriff emphasized the pace of warrant service and patrols in Shelbyville, saying roughly half of Bedford County's population is in Shelbyville and that many of the 850 warrants were served there. "Half of Bedford County's population approximately is in Shelbyville," the sheriff said, explaining why patrol and service activity is concentrated in that city.
He also outlined court-security and transport activity: staff scanned or searched 4,971 people for court security in March, provided security for 34 court sessions covering 1,493 individual court cases, served 36 warrants related to court security and transported 131 inmates to courtrooms.
The sheriff told the committee he had asked the drug task force for a report but had not received it by late afternoon; after calling the task-force director he was told the information would be sent. "I called the director... he said, you know, my bad... he was going to text it to me," the sheriff said, noting the data were not available at the time of the meeting.
The presentation concluded with the sheriff turning the meeting to jail staff for more detailed corrections figures and program updates. The committee moved and seconded routine approvals and proceeded with the rest of the agenda.
The committee did not take further formal action on the sheriff's report during the meeting. Committee members may follow up to request the drug task-force data that was not available at the time of the presentation.
