Board approves Gila Bend library intergovernmental agreement 4–1

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted 4–1 on Wednesday to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the town of Gila Bend to reestablish a county library in that town.
Supervisor Gallardo, who led the IGA initiative, described the item as the restoration of a long‑standing community resource. “This is a partnership…this location is more than just a library. It is our workforce development. It is a voting site. It is a place in which folks can go and receive information in regards to public health,” Gallardo said.
The board debated whether to hear item 94 separately from other library‑district items; after brief discussion the IGA was considered on its own and passed on a 4–1 vote. Vice Chair Lesko said she had unanswered questions about the county’s broader obligations regarding libraries and voted no while noting her concerns would be addressed later.
Chair Brophy McGee said the county would build the library as a separate structure so it would not be confined by school hours and stressed the service benefits for residents. The IGA’s backers said the location will serve multiple community functions beyond lending books.
The board’s approval authorizes staff to execute the agreement with the town of Gila Bend and begin implementation work.
