Summary
The council approved Zoning Amendment No. 33 to rezone roughly 0.5 acres on Herman Avenue to allow reconstruction of two houses and Zoning Amendment No. 34 to rezone and annex a 0.4‑acre parcel on Harkey Lane for a veterinary clinic.
The Tuscaloosa City Council unanimously adopted two zoning amendments during the meeting.
Zoning Amendment No. 33 rezoned about 0.5 acres at 2803 and 2805 Herman Avenue from SFR‑3 to SFR‑4 to permit reconstruction of two houses that were demolished in 2020. Planning staff noted the request conforms to the future land‑use map and that the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval unanimously at its March 2026 meeting. Jaquel Robinson, who identified himself as a local home builder, presented renderings and contact information and said his firm (Homes Group LLC) planned to reconstruct two homes consistent with the requested zoning.
Zoning Amendment No. 34 rezoned about 0.4 acres at 4730 Harkey Lane from SFR‑1 to GC and included annexation of the county portion of the lot into the city. The applicant plans a veterinary clinic; architect Peter Hill said the clinic will expand an existing medical business and confirmed there will be indoor boarding but no outdoor overnight boarding. Planning staff again said the request conforms to the plan and the Planning Commission recommended approval.
Both measures were moved, seconded and adopted by unanimous roll‑call votes.
Why it matters: The votes permit reconstruction and a commercial use (veterinary clinic) in the identified locations and complete annexation for the Harkey Lane parcel, enabling the applicants to pursue building and permitting steps under city zoning.
What’s next: Applicants may proceed with permitting and site work in accordance with the approved rezoning and annexation.
