Birmingham City Council proclaims National Library Week and honors local STEM scholars and track teams

The Birmingham City Council opened its April 21 meeting by noting National Library Week (April 19–25, 2026). Mayor Woodfin read a proclamation praising the Birmingham Public Library system for protecting intellectual freedom and providing equitable access to books, digital tools and programming across neighborhoods.
Janine Langston, executive director of the Birmingham Public Library System, told the council the system has served the city for 140 years and highlighted the North Birmingham Regional Library’s 100‑year anniversary and the contributions of library staff. She thanked the council and invited residents to visit and use library resources.
President Pro Tem Latonya Tate presented two resolution recognitions. The council adopted a resolution honoring Southampton K–8’s Storm Sentinels for being named a national finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition and for securing $50,000 in technology for their school. The council also adopted a resolution recognizing Jackson Olin High School’s boys relay teams for top regional and national rankings and recent competitive achievements; coach Joshua Stevens and school representatives spoke at the podium and accepted recognition.
Council members praised librarians and teachers for supporting students and called attention to related community events, including library anniversary celebrations and district outreach. Both resolutions were approved by unanimous consent and will be included in the council record.
