The New Berlin Police & Fire Commission voted 4-0 on Sept. 10 to ratify Fire Chief Mark Polzin’s recommendation to end the probationary period for Lieutenant Stephen Schweickhardt and make his appointment permanent effective immediately.
The action was announced after the commission convened in closed session under Wisconsin Statute § 19.85(1)(c) to consider personnel matters. Commissioners Lanser, O’Donnell, Palechek and Piontek were present; Police Chief Jeff Hingiss was excused and Fire Chief Mark Polzin attended as staff.
A motion to ratify Chief Polzin’s recommendation to end the probationary period for Lieutenant Stephen Schweickhardt was made after the closed-session discussions and carried on a 4-0 vote (motion by Commissioner Lanser; second by Commissioner Palechek). The minutes record that the appointment was made permanent “effective immediately.”
The commission also recorded an update related to a Fire Department personnel investigation but took no action on that item in open session. Earlier in the meeting the commission approved the July 22, 2025, meeting minutes by a 4-0 vote.
The meeting opened at 1:08 p.m., convened briefly to closed session at 1:09 p.m., returned to open session at 1:19 p.m., and adjourned at 1:20 p.m. The meeting minutes were signed by Recording Secretary Michael D. O’Donnell.
Votes at a glance: the commission approved the July 22, 2025 minutes (motion by Commissioner Palechek; second by Commissioner Lanser; vote 4-0); voted to enter closed session under Wis.
