Students and Avoca Elementary highlight family engagement and behavior programs

A Tennessee High student and Avoca Elementary staff described student leadership and family-engagement activities — SCOPE delegation reflections, reading nights, math nights, golden tickets and positive office referrals — and said such programs help reduce absenteeism and strengthen student culture.
Students and school staff used the April 20 meeting to showcase student leadership opportunities and family-engagement programs in the district.
Mr. Helbing introduced the SCOPE (Student Congress on Public Education) delegates who attended a conference at Belmont University; Hannah Lowe, a Tennessee High junior, described mock board meetings and debates on topics such as whether club sports should count for P.E. She said the SCOPE exercise “opened my mind” to different perspectives and was a valuable learning experience.
Avoca Elementary’s interim principal, Beth Lott, and staff member Ashley Messer described schoolwide efforts to build family engagement and a positive school culture. They highlighted math and literacy nights, reading parties where families take home activities, college-and-career nights, and behavior systems such as golden tickets, class dragons and positive office referrals that reward students and encourage family involvement. Presenters said these activities have helped reduce chronic absenteeism and support student engagement.
Board members and the director of schools thanked the students and staff for the presentations; the director noted these school-level activities help illustrate the district budget and plan.
