Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals elects officers, adopts 2011 schedule

The Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals met on Jan. 4, 2011, at the Smyth County Office Building for its annual organizational meeting. The board elected John Saunders chairman, appointed E. P. Ogle vice chairman and chose Newell Johnson as secretary; each nomination was approved unanimously after motions and seconds from board members.
The board adopted its 2011 meeting calendar, scheduling regular meetings for the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m., with additional meetings to be scheduled as needed around holidays or when the board room is unavailable. The board also reviewed and approved its Operating Procedures as presented, and accepted the Board's 2010 Annual Report for forwarding to the Smyth County Board of Supervisors.
Clegg Williams, listed as staff present, told members that training remains available but not locally and that budget cuts have reduced seminar options; he asked members to contact him if they wished to pursue training opportunities. Williams also informed the board of the Board of Supervisors' recommendations for membership changes: reappointment of John Saunders; Kim Davidson to replace Robert Odum; R. B. Henderson to replace Ron Thomason; and Bill Moss to fill an expired vacant position.
The minutes of the board’s Sept. 7, 2010 meeting were approved on a motion by Mike May and seconded by Newell Johnson. Chairman Saunders adjourned the meeting at approximately 6:15 p.m.
