Supporters urge city help as Ellis County Rural Heritage Farm seeks Texas Historical Commission status

During public comment, John Wiedle of 417 West Jefferson updated the council on efforts to obtain Texas Historical Commission recognition for the Ellis County Rural Heritage Farm at 130 Cunningham Meadows Road.
Wiedle said the farm, which preserves the agrarian history of the Blackland Prairie and the region’s small family farms, has progressed through THC’s review and advanced to phase 2 after a site visit with encouraging feedback. "A July decision is expected on whether to move the farm to the final phase 3 review," he told council, and he asked the city to support the application and help identify legislative contacts.
Wiedle said designation as a THC state historic site would bring economic and educational benefits and could attract multi‑day visitors. Council members thanked him and a councilmember later referenced the farm in closing comments, encouraging residents to visit the site.
