Planning commission asks council for workshop explaining advisory boards' role

At the end of its March 19 meeting, the Sebastian City Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to ask the City Council to hold a public workshop explaining the role of advisory boards and how residents can participate.
Chair prefaced the motion by clarifying the commission's role as an advisory body: it reviews plans, asks questions, researches proposals and makes recommendations to City Council, which makes final decisions. "Planning and zoning doesn't kill anything," the chair said, adding that commissioners seek information from staff and applicants and that residents should not have to travel to Tallahassee to be heard on local projects.
A commissioner (speaker 10) moved that the chair formally request a workshop; the motion was seconded and passed on a unanimous roll call. The commission authorized the chair to bring the request to council, and described the workshop as an opportunity to explain advisory-board responsibilities and how members of the public can provide input.
