TAC hears multiple grant opportunities and program updates, with application deadlines in May–June
Summary
Members heard announcements about VTrans Bicycle & Pedestrian grant funding (applications due June 14), the Vermont Community Tree Planting Program (awards $5,000–$75,000; deadline May 17), a $50M Northern Border Regional Commission Catalyst Program and several USDOT discretionary opportunities (ATIIP, SS4A, ROUTES, Reconnecting Communities).
During Chair and members’ items on May 7, the TAC was briefed on a slate of funding opportunities and program updates relevant to municipal infrastructure and safety projects.
Key items announced included: the VTrans Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, which has additional IIJA Carbon Reduction Program funds for 2024 and accepts applications until June 14 (a pre-application webinar was planned for May 15); the Vermont Community Tree Planting Program with awards between $5,000 and $75,000 and a first-round deadline of May 17; and the Northern Border Regional Commission’s Catalyst Program, which announced $50 million in available funding with infrastructure awards up to $1 million and non-infrastructure awards up to $500,000.
Staff also summarized multiple USDOT discretionary programs and resources including the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP) with $45 million available (planning/design and construction eligibility thresholds apply), the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) NOFO with staggered deadlines, the DOT Discretionary Grants Dashboard and DOT Navigator, the ROUTES program for rural opportunities and the Reconnecting Communities program (noting prior local applications). Members were directed to program webpages for full eligibility details.
Why it matters: the announcements identify near-term funding opportunities that municipal staff and regional partners can pursue to finance bicycle, pedestrian, safety and infrastructure projects. Several programs carry minimum project investment thresholds and match requirements that affect project readiness and eligibility.
