Wayne approves school-bus camera program to cite drivers who pass stop arms

The City of Wayne council voted to approve an interlocal agreement with Bus Patrol that allows the city to issue citations by mail to drivers who disregard a school-bus stop arm.
Police Chief Keith said the program is a partnership among the Wayne Police Department, the Wayne-Westland School District and Bus Patrol. "Bus Patrol has already put cameras on all Wayne-Westland school buses," he said, explaining that when a bus activates its stop arm the system records a 360-degree view and captures video of an offending driver.
Council members asked whether the program has reduced violations. Chief Keith said Dearborn’s results are still early but that even a small number of citations each month would be valuable because passing a stopped school bus creates a serious hazard. Council members who spoke in favor noted the safety benefit to children exiting buses.
The motion to approve the interlocal agreement carried by voice vote. No specific ongoing costs or citation-fee allocations were provided during the discussion; city staff did not provide a roll-call tally for the vote.
