MTPO asks staff to scope a context‑based speed‑management study

Commissioner Prizian raised concerns about rising speeds across county roads and urged the MTPO to consider lowering posted limits in residential and connector corridors. Board members and staff discussed the relative roles of design (engineering) and posted speeds, enforcement limitations and opportunities to use repaving projects to implement calming measures.
Debbie Leisner of the City of Gainesville noted the city has applied for a federal SS4A planning grant for a speed‑management study within city limits and that several corridor studies (including Southwest 13th Street) are already on the MTPO Unified Planning Work Program. "We're still working with FHWA on the agreement," Leisner said of the SS4A award, and she confirmed the MTPO has corridor studies in the pipeline.
The board voted to refer to staff a request to produce a scope, schedule and cost estimate for a context‑based speed‑management study for consideration in future UPWP prioritization and to coordinate with city, county and state engineering teams. The motion passed unanimously.
