Kent County authorizes recruitment for Engineering Project Manager 2 to support succession planning

Kent County Levy Court voted unanimously on April 14 to open recruitment for an Engineering Project Manager 2 position after the county engineer announced her retirement and entered terminal leave.
Staff told the court the assistant public works director has been acting as county engineer and will transition to permanent status on June 1, 2026. Staff recommended recruiting for a Project Manager 2 to provide succession planning and expand the candidate pool; the position is budgeted in fiscal 2027 and staff proposed using the Public Works salary budget line to cover the remainder of FY26 personnel costs.
Commissioner Hertz moved and Vice President Scott seconded the motion to authorize Human Resources to start recruitment and to approve funding from the Public Works salary line for FY26 costs; roll call recorded seven yeas and the motion passed.
Staff said recruitment would begin mid‑April with interviews in May and that recruiting at the Project Manager 2 level should attract a larger qualified candidate pool.
